Chalk cliffs of Durdle Door and Seven Sisters
Updated: Feb 7, 2019
If you have gone through our post on the Isle of Wight you may remember us mentioning how England is replete with natural wonders and that you’re never far from these amazing phenomenon given the size of the country and great connectivity.
One fine weekend, we shot off to a scenic drive to explore the coves, caves and chalk cliffs that decorate the southern coast and it was great pleasure! Durdle Door, Lulworth Cove and Seven Sisters – each offered a unique landscape previously unknown to us and had us flabbergasted!
1. Lulworth Cove
We absolutely loved the circular perfection of this cove, posing a fine example of a landform of its kind. The Earth as we know is continuously evolving and this place like any other, is a work in progress. Sitting by the cove, I was excited thinking about how this place is going to look like, thousands of years later.
And if you are wondering how this cove might have looked like a few hundred thousand years ago, just start hiking towards the Durdle Door from Lulworth Cove. In less than half a mile you’ll see a small arch on your left. Picturesque, it’s the Stair Hole – an infant cove undergoing a really slow transformation. Wonderful, right!
2. Durdle Door
You know you are on the south coast when you find yourself between windswept cliffs and rolling farms with wide views.
But Durdle Door takes the coastal panorama to another level! A gigantic arch extending in to the sea will rather have you confused, excited and overwhelmed at the first sight. The place forms a part of the beautiful Jurassic Coast and is best explored at a leisurely place absorbing the delightful surroundings and spending time on the beach. If this massive structure intrigues you more, you can actually swim to the bottom of the arch and make your experience truly memorable!
England is truly the champion of coastal walks! The estate surrounding the Durdle Door is privately owned in the name of Lulworth Estate and is beautifully maintained. The iconic chalk cliffs for which visitors flock the coast at Dover and Seven Sisters Country Park, are also found here.
We took a long walk as the sun shone brightly over the stunning scene. Idyllic in every sense :)
Who minds some humour along the way eh? Though we sincerely applaud the management at Lulworth Estate for the effort spent in the upkeep of the area, but somebody went too far with the hindi translation of the notice up here! Hindi readers, you are up for a laugh!!
And then it was time to leave this wonderland and go back to the reality. Nevertheless, the setting sun made for a picture postcard moment on our climb back. Views of the unspoilt countryside offered a perfect end to the day.
3. Seven Sisters Country Park
The next day – on a bright Sunday along with a couple of friends we set out to explore another marvel on the unspoilt British coastline, the Seven Sisters cliffs. The cherry on top was the drive through sophisticated and quiet English countryside. I had my nose glued to the window for the good part of the journey. The scene looked incredibly beautiful in the way it caught light as it broke through the clouds. It’s a feast for all the senses. Bathe in the pretty sunlight, admire the rustic tranquillity, listen to the chirping birds, smell the fragrant air and stop by a village hostelry for local flavours.
And as if this was not enough, we were yet to be treated by the bizarre landscape of the chalk cliffs. The first sight of the massive structure gave me a jolt, reminding me just how diverse the planet is.
I was rather sceptic to walk the rim of the cliff but wanted the kicks nevertheless, so I did this
Be careful though, a walk along the edge is strictly not recommended owing to recent sliding of the fragile edges. There have been sudden cliff collapses sending thousands of tons of limestone crumbling in to the sea, so better watch out!
My heart kept singing as we drove back spending a perfect day out in heaven! Have you ever been to the chalk cliffs anywhere in the world? Let us know about your experience!
